Sworn In at the State Capitol: A Commitment to Illinois Families

Today, as the 104th General Assembly begins, I had the honor of taking the Oath of Office alongside my colleagues Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich), Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City), Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro), and Marty McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills). While many participated in the ceremony at the University of Illinois at Springfield, we chose to take our oaths at the Illinois State Capitol. This decision was intentional, as the Capitol is not only the heart of state governance but also the place where many of Illinois’ problems begin—and where solutions must be crafted.

Representing the 107th District, which includes Shelby County and parts of Macon, Christian, Moultrie, Montgomery, Effingham, and Cumberland counties, I am fully aware of the challenges ahead. Illinois is at a critical crossroads. Under Democratic control, our state faces rising taxes, escalating crime, fewer job opportunities, and an exodus of families and businesses. The numbers don’t lie—people are leaving Illinois at alarming rates. This trajectory must change.

Across the country, states with stable, pro-growth policies are thriving. They’ve adopted competitive tax codes, attracted businesses, and improved the lives of their citizens. Illinois has been absent from this conversation, but it’s time we take notice. Every Illinoisan deserves the opportunity to thrive, and high taxes and burdensome regulations shouldn’t stand in the way. By following the example of states that are doing it right, we can restore opportunity and prosperity here in Illinois.

Our decision to hold the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol wasn’t just symbolic—it was a statement. As Representative Niemerg said, “The Capitol is where many of our state’s problems begin. The Lame Duck session just ended, and instead of addressing skyrocketing property taxes or the influx of illegal immigrants, leaders in the House and Senate ignored these issues and pushed through legislation to make them worse.”

Representative Wilhour added, “Illinois citizens are tired of their interests taking a back seat to the radical policies of the far left. They’re fed up with high taxes, unsafe communities, and watching their friends and neighbors leave the state. It’s time for leaders who prioritize the needs of working families over political theater and gamesmanship.”

For me, this day is about more than taking an oath—it’s about renewing our commitment to the people of Illinois. As I stated during the ceremony, “When families are struggling to afford groceries and heat their homes, the last thing they want is self-congratulatory speeches. They want action, solutions, and legislators who put their needs first. Today, we’re sending a clear message: we will keep fighting for the working families of Illinois.”

Judge Mike McHaney administered the oath of office during the ceremony, marking the beginning of a new chapter in our fight to make Illinois a better place for all.
